Google News & Weather directs users to the updated Google News

In what isn't surprising "news" for anyone, Google's News & Weather app is slowly being deprecated in favor of the more recent Google News. The application, which was pre-installed on many Android devices in the past and served as a good place to check the news, is now nearing the end of its life.

When Google News was launched in May, it came as an update to the existing Play Newsstand app. At the same time, the separate Google News & Weather app was unpublished from the Play Store, probably to avoid confusion if users searched for "Google News" and landed on the older app instead.

Now, for those users who have still been hanging onto News & Weather, preferring its non-algorithmic and more to-the-point approach, the app has started to show a banner on top saying it's being replaced by Google News. Tapping the banner either takes you to download News from the Play Store or opens it if it's already installed on your device. Predictably, users aren't very happy about the change. Some are already leaving bad reviews for News & Weather, saying they don't want to switch to the new app and prefer the way their articles and news are organized in the existing app.

For now, News & Weather is still updating its content and getting recent articles for you to read, but who knows when that'll stop happening. It could be soon or it could take a while, but either way, if you are using the app, you should start looking for a replacement. Whether it's Google News or something else is up to you, you just need to be prepared.

Instagram starts showing activity status in direct messages

... In its quest to become the only app where you share photos, moments, and messages, Instagram is adding one new feature to its direct messages: activity status. Just like you'd see when a person was last active on WhatsApp or Telegram or plenty of other messaging services, now you can do the same on Instagram and chide them for not replying with "oohs" and "aahs" to the preettay pic of a sunset that you just posted or the kissy face you messaged directly to them. Android 1.0 versus Android 9: A visual tour of how far we've come in a decade

Android has changed tremendously in the last ten years. Returning to modern hardware after our historical series , I was struck by the visual differences across versions. LG G7 ThinQ to Have Boombox-Like Sound, Feature DTS:X Immersive Audio

In typical LG fashion, we're learning more about the upcoming G7 ThinQ via official channels, even though we're 2 days away from an unveiling in NYC. This is fine with us, so long as we get a better understanding of what to expect later this week. Yesterday, LG detailed all of the different audio aspects of the device. For those who cry for dual stereo speakers, that doesn't appear to be the case on the G7 ThinQ. Instead, LG is utilizing a single speaker, but incorporating a design that's essentially an echo chamber. In LG's writeup, they call it a " Boombox speaker ," but what's actually happening is a bit more interesting.
