New Samsung Galaxy Watch launches alongside the Note 9

August 9 is a date that has been marked red on our calendar for a while. Samsung celebrated its Unpacked event in New York earlier today and, after the new Galaxy Note 9 was revealed, Samsung went one further and showed us its new smartwatch - the Galaxy Watch. So what does this new device offer?

Samsung's new watch had already leaked a couple of weeks ago, but the leak only contained a few images of the smartwatch with no news of its features or specs. Excited fans had to wait for Samsung's official presentation today to find out what the Galaxy Watch really has to offer.

The logical evolution of the Samsung Gear S3

Samsung's Gear line has not introduced a new model since the launch of the Gear S3 back in 2016, and two years is a long time coming. It is true that, in 2017, the Korean brand put out the Gear Sport but, as the name indicates, this was a specialist model intended for sporting use.

The Galaxy Watch is, therefore, the natural successor to the Samsung Gear S3. The watch comes in two different sizes, 46 mm (like the Gear S3) and 42 mm (like the Gear Sport). The main difference between the two lies in the level of autonomy. The larger watch will run for 80 hours in normal mode and 24 hours if you use the GPS. The smaller watch promises 48 hours of battery life in normal mode and 14 hours with the GPS activated.

The watch uses the Exynos 9110 processor, making it 35% more efficient than its predecessor the Gear S3. The operating system is Tizen 4.0.

The screen is protected by Gorilla Glass DX+ and is scratch-resistant. In spite of having IP68 certification and being waterproof up to 5 atm, Samsung does not recommend you take this thing scuba diving or water skiing... we've been warned!

That doesn't mean you can't play sports with this new smartwatch though. It features 39 different training modes, which can be combined with each other, and shows your time, pulse and calories consumed at all times. And yes, you can swim with the new Galaxy Watch.

If you want to rest a while and turn off notifications on your watch, you can choose between several different modes: Sleep, Cinema, Do Not Disturb, etc. In addition, you are able to track sleep hours and analyze your rest with the new device. If you own a Galaxy S, Note, A or J, you can also synchronize with Samsung Health.
