Verizon Opens Pre-Orders For Kid-Friendly GizmoWatch

In short: Verizon announced the GizmoWatch today, which a smartwatch for kids. Pre-orders are now open, and it will be available beginning October 10. The GizmoWatch is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 2100 processor, and does have 4G LTE included. This is going to allow parents to keep track of their kids when they are at school, or even at someone's home. This is aimed more for those kids that are too young for a phone, but you still want to be able to get in touch with them. With the GizmoHub app, you are able to locate your kid at any time, since it does have 4G LTE capability, it'll be able to give you the location, even when it doesn't have any WiFi.

Background: Kid-friendly watches are pretty popular over in Asia. Parents give them to their younger kids that are too young for a phone, but they still need to keep in touch with them. Many of these watches have 4G LTE connectivity, and the Snapdragon Wear 2500 chipset was made specifically for these watches, so it's a bit odd that Verizon is using the Snapdragon Wear 2100 chipset. The battery life on this smartwatch from Verizon can last around four days on a single charge, and that is because it doesn't use apps as much as an Apple Watch, Wear OS smartwatch or even one of Samsung's smartwatches.

Impact: Verizon is selling the GizmoWatch in two colors – pink and blue. It'll be priced at $179 full retail as well as on contract. Since it's the same price on a two-year contract, you might as well just get it out of contract, and pay a bit less on your monthly bill. You will need to add it to your data plan, which won't cost much and Verizon does also charge a $30 activation fee on this smartwatch.
