  • Samsung will unveil the UI for its foldable phone at its developer conference next week, clueing us in to how it will operate.
  • However, the company may not unveil a working version of the device itself.
  • Samsung hasn't revealed when it is likely to release the phone.

Samsung has confirmed it will unveil the user interface (UI) for its upcoming foldable phone at next week's Samsung Developer Conference. The company's Lee Kyeong-tae made the announcement in a conference call alongside Samsung's quarter three 2018 financial results, reports Asiae.

In other quotes from the call, this time reported by Chosun, Lee said the full difference between existing smartphone interfaces and the one Samsung will use for its foldable phone will be revealed at the event.

Samsung's folding phone is one of the most anticipated upcoming Android devices, but we still don't know how it will operate. Samsung has previously said the user interface of its foldable phone will be different to existing smartphones and tablets so it can make full use of the phone's unique design. The company has even reportedly been working with Google to create a version of Android for the device.

Finding out how the device's software will work could give us many clues as to its physical design.

Mobile VR headsets – what are your best options?

Standalone VR headsets like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive Pro do their job brilliantly but both come at a premium. The Rift will set you back $399, while HTC's option currently retails for $799. …

However, Lee suggested the phone itself is yet to be finished, casting doubt on whether we'll see a prototype at the conference. As has been the case with past statements from people at Samsung about the phone, Lee simply said the company is working on the finalizing the device and that he can't confirm when Samsung will be able to release it.

Lee also reaffirmed some rumors we've heard about the device. He said the phone will be usable as a regular phone while folded and as a tablet while unfolded. He also said that the device will have a focus on multitasking — unsurprising given the anticipated large display.

While it now seems unlikely that we will get to see the final product at the event — which begins November 7 — we should at least have a much better idea about what Samsung is planning after the conference.
