Samsung says the Galaxy Note 8 will be the best handset for media consumption

Samsung released its earnings for the second quarter of the year today. The company has posted record operating profits and has become the most profitable tech company on the planet this past quarter.

The company has also revealed some details about its strategy for the second half of this year. Samsung expects demand for smartphones and tablets to increase in the second half due to strong seasonality, however, it is cognizant of the fact that there’s going to be strong competition from its rivals.

To that end, the company will be launching a new smartphone next month, the much-awaited Galaxy Note 8. Samsung has also said that it’s going to work hard to maintain the sales momentum of the Galaxy S8.

In a conference call with analysts this morning after releasing the earnings results, a Samsung executive mentioned that the Galaxy Note 8 will be well suited for those who like to consume a lot of multimedia content on their handsets.

“The Galaxy Note series, first launched in 2011, come with a range of multimedia features, including the large-size display, and S Pen, only available with the smartphone models,” the executive said, adding that the Galaxy Note 8 is going to have “more advanced, richer multimedia functionalities.”

Samsung is due to unveil the Galaxy Note 8 on August 23 in New York City.

Some OnePlus 6Ts have an issue with waves of static on the display

Based on a handful of reports on the OnePlus product forums, some 6T owners have run into a problem with their phone's display in which a pixelated sort of "wave" or pulse of bright colors travels up or down the screen. A reliable trigger can't seem to be found, but for those that are affected, it appears to happen more often on the lock screen while using either OnePlus' face recognition or the in-display fingerprint sensor to unlock the phone. The issue — which our Cody Toombs aptly described as "like something changed in the Matrix" — is demonstrated in the video below: VIDEO Based on reports, a factory reset can't fix the problem, and it doesn't appear to be tied to any specific SKU. Samsung Display remains the leader in global display market

The latest data from IHS Markit shows that Samsung Display has retained its dominant position as the top global smartphone display vendor in the first quarter of this year. It was able to do that as more smartphone manufacturers opted for OLED panels for their premium devices. Samsung picked up the bulk of those orders. Samsung's display affiliate is estimated to have shipped $3.4 billion worth of smartphone displays in the first quarter ending March 2019. It accounted for 40.2 percent of the smartphone display market in this period. Samsung Display also accounted for 80 percent of OLED panel supplies.
