Chibi-Styled Assassin’s Creed Rebellion Up For Pre-Registry

Chibi-Styled Assassin's Creed Rebellion Up For Pre-Registry

In Short: Ubisoft is working on a new Assassin's Creed game for mobile with a chibi art style and 2D gameplay, called Assassin's Creed Rebellion. The remixed game boils down genre staples into a character collector that charges you with building and managing a brotherhood of assassins and a fortress for them in order to resist the Templars in grand fashion across a number of exotic locales and well-guarded fortresses. The game is currently open for pre-registration, with a release date of November 21st on the books. All pre-registered players will get certain rewards depending on how many people sign up before the game is released, ranging from 5,000 coins and 300 Helix credits at 500,000 registrations all the way to Mario Auditore for all players to use at 3 million registrations. The game is free to play, with in-app purchases available for certain types of items. As with most freemium games, you don't technically have to spend a dime in order to play the game start to finish. The degree of pay-to-win, if it exists, won't be able to be determined until the game is released.

Background: This game combines elements of a 2D action game, a stealth game, a city builder, and a gacha RPG. You'll build up a fortress for your brotherhood, where you will craft weapons and items, and house a team comprised of up to 40 different assassins from throughout the game series' timeline, including a few new faces created just for this new mobile game. All of the normal moves that make the Assassin's Creed games the spectacular parkour fests that they are will be available, but movement is now constrained to a 2D plane, and you'll be fighting or sneaking your way through set stages, rather than hunting your targets down in an interconnected open world. Iconic series moments such as diving 100 feet into a hay bale are nowhere to be seen in the trailer, which likely means that a lot of the typical open-world shenanigans have not been retooled to fit within the game's 2D plane and fixed level format. Even so, fans can expect a great deal of the series' usual heart and quirkiness to translate to this new form.

Impact: This is the first gacha game in the Assassin's Creed universe, and it's almost certainly going to be updated and fed fresh content for the foreseeable future, essentially serving as a mobile portal into the world of the series. It's not the first 2D Assassin's Creed game, on mobile or otherwise, and there is a more "proper" entry on mobile in the form of Assassin's Creed Identity. That should make the role that this one is going to play in the series at large quite clear, and fans who want to see fresh content on a constant basis have plenty of reason to be excited. The game is likely to feature an evolving story and a range of special events to go with that constant churn of new content, and it's also quite possible, if not entirely inevitable, that we will see content, characters and storylines from Rebellion spilling out into the main series. The story laid out thus far seems to revolve around a new version of the Animus that's made it possible to link Assassins' timelines and bring them together to combine their talents, a world-building excuse that's so ripe with possibilities that, to be quite frank in applying evidence from past patterns, a company like Ubisoft would be crazy to ignore. Time, and likely in-app purchase sales figures, will tell just how much of all this conjecture comes to pass, or if perhaps this game's destiny will take a different turn altogether regardless of its critical and financial success or failure.
