Keep Notes on the web is the latest to get a Material Design refresh

It took a little longer than some other products, but the recently renamed Keep Notes Android app was updated in line with Google's new Material Theme last week. The same new stylings are now starting to roll out to Keep on the web, and it looks much cleaner than before.

"Too much white space" has often been the complaint with Google's recent design refreshes and the new Keep continues this trend. The same principles apply as with the Android app — the yellow header is now white, the gray background is now white, and Google's Product Sans is used for headers with Roboto for body text.

The way things used to be.

The slide-out menu on the left side now has the rounded yellow identifier for what's in focus, and the iconography has been updated to include Google's new hollowed out versions. The general rounding of everything continues, and the settings cog has been moved to the top right corner of the header bar.

Out with the old (above) and in with the new (below).

There are no changes to functionality — this is very much just a fresh lick of paint. One of my accounts has the new design but the other doesn't, so don't panic if you don't have it yet. It'll roll out to you in due course.

Instagram starts showing activity status in direct messages

... In its quest to become the only app where you share photos, moments, and messages, Instagram is adding one new feature to its direct messages: activity status. Just like you'd see when a person was last active on WhatsApp or Telegram or plenty of other messaging services, now you can do the same on Instagram and chide them for not replying with "oohs" and "aahs" to the preettay pic of a sunset that you just posted or the kissy face you messaged directly to them. Android 1.0 versus Android 9: A visual tour of how far we've come in a decade

Android has changed tremendously in the last ten years. Returning to modern hardware after our historical series , I was struck by the visual differences across versions. For a closer look, we rolled back to an even earlier build on our T-Mobile G1/HTC Dream. For anyone who might be curious, here's a quick visual exploration of Android 1.0 vs. Android 9 Pie. Samsung Campus: Applications for the Third Session of the Web & Apps Coding Training Course are Now Open

  Students may now apply to join Samsung Campus by filling their application for the third session of the Samsung Campus “Web & Apps Coding” training course. Young people between the ages of 18 and 25, with no high school diploma and passionate about computing, have until midnight on September 18 th to register on www.samsungcampus.fr . Preselected applicants will enter a three-week initial session on October 3, to gain the foundations they need for the training and to assess their motivation before entering the Samsung Campus.   Opened in Saint-Ouen, France in September 2014, Samsung Campus is a socially engaged training center that offers a free training course to develop digital skills for approximatively 50 young people per year.
