Samsung and SKT might release Galaxy A71 5G / A Quantum on May 15

SK Telecom's exclusive Galaxy A71 5G variant will reportedly be released on May 15, according to the Korean media. In addition, the device – which may launch on SKT's network as the Galaxy A Quantum – will be available for 600,000 won ($494) as opposed to the price of 700,000 won ($576) that was previously (and unofficially) attached to the device.

Just in time to steal the LG Velvet's thunder

In case you didn't know, LG took the veil of a new 5G upper-mid-range phone not long ago. It's called the LG Velvet, and it will go on sale in South Korea on May 15. Now, according to the local media, SK Telecom's Galaxy A71 5G / Galaxy A Quantum is planned for release on the same day, and if this turns out to be correct, it's certainly no coincidence.

One of the impressive characteristics the so-called Galaxy A Quantum has and the LG Velvet lacks is a quantum RNG chip capable of generating truly random and unpredictable numbers. This is a great advancement in security, and the Galaxy A Quantum from SKT is the first and only phone in the world to boast this feature. Even the Galaxy A71 5G in other markets is missing it, and that's because the QRNG chip was seemingly developed by a close SKT partner.

The standard Galaxy A71 5G sans the QRNG chip is expected to launch in the USA this summer.

Samsung Display remains the leader in global display market

The latest data from IHS Markit shows that Samsung Display has retained its dominant position as the top global smartphone display vendor in the first quarter of this year. It was able to do that as more smartphone manufacturers opted for OLED panels for their premium devices. Samsung picked up the bulk of those orders. Samsung's display affiliate is estimated to have shipped $3.4 billion worth of smartphone displays in the first quarter ending March 2019. It accounted for 40.2 percent of the smartphone display market in this period. Samsung Display also accounted for 80 percent of OLED panel supplies. ARCore apps are now available for the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S in China

Google's ARCore apps can now run on the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S in China. The apps are available in the Xiaomi App Store through a partnership with Google. A tweet from the Google AR & VR Twitter account announced the news today, although the exact ARCore apps that are now compatible with the Mi Mix 2S were not named. Google did say in the tweet that more partners for ARCore are coming soon. The Mi Mix 2S is the first phone from the manufacturer to support ARCore. Some OnePlus 6Ts have an issue with waves of static on the display

Based on a handful of reports on the OnePlus product forums, some 6T owners have run into a problem with their phone's display in which a pixelated sort of "wave" or pulse of bright colors travels up or down the screen. A reliable trigger can't seem to be found, but for those that are affected, it appears to happen more often on the lock screen while using either OnePlus' face recognition or the in-display fingerprint sensor to unlock the phone.
