Sony’s mobile business continues to shrink, only 2 million devices sold in Q2 2018

Sony's smartphones have never been big sellers, but as the market continues to get more competitive, the company has continued fading into the background. Now, its latest earnings report reveals some even more troublesome numbers…

The latest earnings report from Sony (via The Verge) breaks down the company's overall sales by division. While there's a fair amount of good in there, the company's mobile division is clearly struggling even more so. In fact, the already small sales numbers have dropped by 27%. That means Sony only sold a mere 2 million smartphones in Q2 of 2018.

That number may sound like a lot, but it's a very poor number. Samsung, for comparison, is catching a lot of heat of poor sales that totaled 9 million units over the same time period, and that was just of one smartphone. Sony has even revised its estimate for smartphone sales in 2018, bringing that down to 9 million in total.

Sony has never even tried to be a big player in the smartphone market, so none of this should come as a shock. However, the company does still offer some solid smartphones, so it's a shame to see so few people remotely interested in them. Granted, selling $1,000 smartphones in 2018 that barely offer anything of interest over devices nearly half the cost isn't helping matters at all…

Samsung Display remains the leader in global display market

The latest data from IHS Markit shows that Samsung Display has retained its dominant position as the top global smartphone display vendor in the first quarter of this year. It was able to do that as more smartphone manufacturers opted for OLED panels for their premium devices. Samsung picked up the bulk of those orders. Samsung's display affiliate is estimated to have shipped $3.4 billion worth of smartphone displays in the first quarter ending March 2019. It accounted for 40.2 percent of the smartphone display market in this period. Samsung Display also accounted for 80 percent of OLED panel supplies. ARCore apps are now available for the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S in China

Google's ARCore apps can now run on the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S in China. The apps are available in the Xiaomi App Store through a partnership with Google. A tweet from the Google AR & VR Twitter account announced the news today, although the exact ARCore apps that are now compatible with the Mi Mix 2S were not named. Google did say in the tweet that more partners for ARCore are coming soon. The Mi Mix 2S is the first phone from the manufacturer to support ARCore. Some OnePlus 6Ts have an issue with waves of static on the display

Based on a handful of reports on the OnePlus product forums, some 6T owners have run into a problem with their phone's display in which a pixelated sort of "wave" or pulse of bright colors travels up or down the screen. A reliable trigger can't seem to be found, but for those that are affected, it appears to happen more often on the lock screen while using either OnePlus' face recognition or the in-display fingerprint sensor to unlock the phone. The issue — which our Cody Toombs aptly described as "like something changed in the Matrix" — is demonstrated in the video below: VIDEO Based on reports, a factory reset can't fix the problem, and it doesn't appear to be tied to any specific SKU.
