Google Lens visual search now rolling out to Google app for iOS

Google Lens began widely rolling out to Android in March and got a big update at I/O 2018 with real-time results and smart text selection. The visual search feature is now rolling out to the Google app for iOS.

In March, Google Lens came to iOS via Google Photos. This new implementation in the Google app features a live viewfinder instead of requiring users to first snap a picture and add to the camera roll. The search bar at the top of the Google app now features a Lens icon next to voice search.

On initial launch, users will be asked to grant camera permission to the app and agree to other terms and services, as well as a tutorial nothing the ability to "Scan Text" and "Shop Smarter."

The former has Google Lens grab the text from an image for analysis, including looking up words, saving an email address, or starting a phone call. Meanwhile, Lens can help find similar looking products, like shoes or other clothing.

Google Lens has a very straightforward interface. Users can tap on an object or text in the viewfinder to begin an analysis. Points of interest will be highlighted, with results sliding up from the bottom sheet. Controls include turning on the flash to better illuminate a scene and opening your photo gallery to have Lens analyze an existing image.

Other features include:

  • Copy Text Try phone numbers, dates, and addresses
  • Search Similar Products Try clothing and furniture
  • Identify Plants and Animals Try flowers and dog breeds
  • Discover Books & Media Try books, movies, music albums, and video games
  • Scan Codes Try barcodes and QR codes

According to the company on Twitter, Google Lens is beginning to widely roll out today, with users spotting it in the iOS app for the past several weeks.

Instagram starts showing activity status in direct messages

... In its quest to become the only app where you share photos, moments, and messages, Instagram is adding one new feature to its direct messages: activity status. Just like you'd see when a person was last active on WhatsApp or Telegram or plenty of other messaging services, now you can do the same on Instagram and chide them for not replying with "oohs" and "aahs" to the preettay pic of a sunset that you just posted or the kissy face you messaged directly to them. Android 1.0 versus Android 9: A visual tour of how far we've come in a decade

Android has changed tremendously in the last ten years. Returning to modern hardware after our historical series , I was struck by the visual differences across versions. LG G7 ThinQ to Have Boombox-Like Sound, Feature DTS:X Immersive Audio

In typical LG fashion, we're learning more about the upcoming G7 ThinQ via official channels, even though we're 2 days away from an unveiling in NYC. This is fine with us, so long as we get a better understanding of what to expect later this week. Yesterday, LG detailed all of the different audio aspects of the device. For those who cry for dual stereo speakers, that doesn't appear to be the case on the G7 ThinQ. Instead, LG is utilizing a single speaker, but incorporating a design that's essentially an echo chamber.
