Maybe Android TV isn't dying? Google announces the platform has tens of millions of users

Android TV has had a really weird life. The platform actually started way back as Google TV but was rebranded as Android TV and brought into the main Android software branch. Google launched a Nexus Player to showcase it but has seemingly abandoned it, and now there are only a handful of third-party boxes. Several smart TV brands use Android TV for its OS, however, including some heavy hitters like Sony, but Google doesn't seem to care much about it as opposed to Chromecast.

Despite all of that, though, it turns out Android TV is doing okay-ish. It apparently has tens of millions of users around the world, including users of set top boxes, smart TVs with Android TV, and things like DirecTV Now's weird beta streaming box. The user base is split about half with set top boxes and half with integrated TVs.

There's still some fuzz around that data, though, like whether "tens of millions" means around 20 million or 80 million. One of those numbers would be phenomenal, while the other would be good but perhaps a little disappointing. It does mean that Android TV is growing and has plenty of headroom left to turn into a legitimate, competitive smart TV platform against Amazon's Fire TV, Apple TV, and Roku boxes.

Don't count it out just yet.
