Latest Open Betas for OnePlus 5/5T remove Clipboard, add iPhone X-style navigation gestures on 5T

  • OnePlus announced Open Beta 5 and Open Beta 3 for the OnePlus 5 and 5T, respectively.
  • The updates remove the Clipboard app, include a CPU security patch, and more.
  • The latest Open Beta updates are now available for download.

Rejoice, OnePlus 5 and 5T owners, for a new Open Beta is available for your phones and includes an interesting mix of additions, subtractions, and fixes.

First up is the removal of the Clipboard app, which debuted on the OnePlus 5T just two weeks ago. The idea was for a little window to pop up whenever you copied something. For example, copying a link would open the page in a browser, while copying a word would bring up a search query.

The problem is that some folks found Clipboard to be annoying. Because it was a separate app and not something baked into the software, it would put itself between your two most recent applications. This made things irritating when switching between apps, so the best way to solve that is for OnePlus to get rid of it.

Elsewhere, the OnePlus 5T’s Open Beta throws in new navigation gestures à la the iPhone X. These gestures can be enabled by going into Settings and disabling the navigation bar. New gestures include swiping up from the middle to take you home and pausing for around a second after swiping from the bottom for recent apps. You can also swipe up from the left or right side of the screen to go back, a gesture that can be used interchangeably.

If you would rather see these gestures in action, you are shown a tutorial in Settings once you turn off the navigation bar. Just remember that these gestures only work on the OnePlus 5T. We do not know if they will eventually be available for the OnePlus 5.

Both phones do let you choose whether to slide up or down to pick up incoming calls, however. The updates also throw in an SMS categorization function for those in India and CPU security patch CVE-2017-13218.
