OPPO patents design for foldable smartphone, to take on Samsung Galaxy X

Foldable smartphones are inching closer to reality. While Samsung has already confirmed working on a foldable Galaxy X smartphone, Chinese handset company OPPO is expected to join the bandwagon soon.

OPPO has now patented a design for a foldable device that could be used as a tablet, according to reports. The patent was picked up by China Mobile (via GSMArena) and presents an exciting prospect for those awaiting the first truly foldable handsets.

“The patent indicates that the device would look something like a regular smartphone device -- albeit without a bezel on one side -- when in one configuration, but that it could also open up to resemble a compact tablet,” Android Authority reported on Tuesday.

OPPO is said to be one of the manufacturers currently eyeing a foldable product, along with Samsung, LG and Apple.

Samsung will be testing the waters with its truly foldable OLED smartphone in its “Galaxy” series with a limited run in South Korea. It is one of the very few smartphone manufacturers hedging their bets on foldable flagships.

According to reports, Samsung showcased an “almost finished” version of the foldable phone at the recently concluded Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Samsung’s Galaxy X is expected to come with an edge-to-edge display that can be folded inwards.

In November last year, Apple also filed a patent application for a yet-unnamed foldable device that can be “opened and closed like a book.”

Sony Announces Smaller Digital Paper E-Ink Writing Tablet

Sony has now announced a smaller follow-up to last year's Digital Paper E-ink writing tablet, the DPT-RP1. That's according to a new announcement made today via Sony's official blog. The new tablet – also dubbed with Digital Paper branding but sold under the model number DPT-CP1 – seems to be the same basic design as the previous model. However, while that earlier device was sized as close as possible to A4 paper with a 13.3-inch display, the new model drops to A5 with a 10.3-inch display. That should make its use much easier under a wider number of circumstances since it will arguably be easier to hold in one hand while writing with the other.  However, there will certainly be other benefits as well. Samsung to build a P3 ‘total semiconductor factory’ in Pyeongtaek by 2021

It hasn't been long since Samsung completed the construction of its P2 semiconductor plant in Pyeongtaek, but now, the company is preparing to build its 3rd 'P3' semiconductor factory in the same city in the Gyeonggi Province. According to reports from the local media , Samsung wants to start constructing the P3 plant in September and make it fully operational by the end of 2021. The P3 plant will reportedly be 300 meters longer than the existing P2 plant, topping a total of 700 meters in length. Constructing the building itself should take roughly a year, and a few additional months will be needed to install the necessary equipment and ready it for mass production. Motorola 's Pronto Suite of applications is going to be used by the States of Jersey Police, proposed as a forward-moving effort to transition from using methods for simpler tasks that could be completed more efficiently in the field by using digital resources instead of using paper. Examples of tasks that could be completed with some of the apps in the Pronto Suite are things like taking down statements or handing out penalty notices. The idea behind getting on board with the Pronto Suite is to save time for officers in the field and help streamline things.
