GE Debuts Alexa-Enabled Microwave, Priced At $155 With An Echo Dot

GE or General Electric, has just announced a new connected microwave that works with Alexa. But Alexa isn't the biggest feature on this microwave. It also has the ability for you to scan the barcode on whatever it is you are cooking and then the microwave will adjust the settings and timer to cook it without burning it. This is good for those times that you are microwaving popcorn or a TV Dinner or something of the sort. But in all honesty, it's likely not a feature that will get used all that often. But GE says that there are more than 3,000 items in its database for this feature, so it's more than likely that the item you are scanning is going to be available.

Alexa support is about what you'd expect from a microwave. It'll allow you to add time, stop cooking and so forth, using your voice. You'll also be able to check and see how much time is left before your food is ready, without having to get up and check on it yourself. Of course, you can also do this with the GE app that is available for both iOS and Android, without needing to use Alexa. But it is nice having the ability to do it both ways.

GE is selling this microwave, which is a 9 cubic-foot model, for $139. However, over on Amazon you can pick it up with an Amazon Echo Dot for $155. Which effectively gets you an Echo Dot for just $15, that's much lower than its normal $50 asking price. That makes this bundle more than worth picking up right now. This microwave is actually not all that much more expensive than a regular "dumb" microwave from GE or another competitor, but it is nice to bring some more "smarts" into the kitchen, a place where smart appliances can really take off.
