How to Enable Android P's Dark Theme on Your Google Pixel

Android 9.0 P will be released to the public in August 2018, but beta testers can already install it on Google's own Pixel devices and a select few other phones. In the latest release, there's a fairly hidden setting that lets you enable a system-wide dark theme that changes the look of your Quick Settings panel and other menus.

It's similar to the automatic system theme that was introduced in Android 8.1 Oreo, except you no longer have to use a black or dark wallpaper to trigger it. Instead, you can manually choose a light theme, dark theme, or the existing automatic theme.

To try it out, make sure you're running the latest beta version of Android P, then head to your phone's main Settings menu and tap "Display." From there, hit "Advanced" to expand several more options. At the bottom of these is "Device" theme — tap this, then choose either the "Automatic," "Light," or "Dark" theme.

The Settings menu won't change colors, nor will any of your apps. But there are still plenty of places where the dark theme applies. Check them out below!

[Update: More details from internal email] Essential reportedly cancels second phone, puts itself up for sale

According to Bloomberg , Essential, an up-and-coming phone manufacturer, is reportedly calling it quits, canceling its second phone and putting out a "For Sale" sign. The company, founded by Android's creator Andy Rubin, has supposedly hired an outside firm to advise it on a potential sale, with one suitor allegedly showing interest. The Essential Phone, or the PH-1, was a phone focused on physical beauty, despite the deep notch at the top of the display for the front camera and sensors. Despite its problems, it gained a small but loyal following, many of whom were anxiously waiting for Essential's sophomore phone (PH-2?). Those dreams look to be crushed now, with Rubin's company canceling its second device. alcatel 5V debuts with notched screen, dual rear cameras, 4,000 mAh battery

TCL-owned alcatel has unveiled its newest flagship offering today, the 5V. The phone comes with a 6.2-inch 19:9 notched display with 720x1500 resolution, an 88% screen-to-body ratio, and 2.5D Dragontrail glass on top. The alcatel 5V has a dual 12 MP + 2 MP rear camera system with dual-tone LED flash, with the secondary sensor being used only for depth information, enabling bokeh effects. The main snapper has 1.25μm pixels and 1/2.8" size, and the camera software can do things like AI scene detection, burst shot, HDR, real-time bokeh, and it also contains electronic image stabilization and Google Lens (which tries to identify the things you're pointing the camera at). The selfie shooter is an 8 MP unit with 1.12μm pixels and 1/4" sensor size.
