Travel to the African wetlands with National Geographic's VR

Earlier this December, National Geographic and YouTube announced that they were teaming up to work on several VR projects. The first is a four part series set in the African wetlands, which takes you on an immersive 360 journey to Botswana's Okavango Delta. Episode 1, the Okavango Experience is now out.

To create the virtual reality video, National Geographic filmmakers joined the Okavango Wilderness Project team on their mission to survey the wildlife and ecosystems by canoe. The information they gather will be used for conservation efforts. The delta is described as one of the "last wild places on Earth", as well as one of the most biodiverse areas on the African continent, if not the world. It is located in northern Botswana and covers from 1200 to 3000 square miles, depending on the season. It is home to hundreds of species of birds, as well as elephants, cheetahs, rhinos and more.

In the first episode, National Geographic welcomes you to watch zebras, "ride in a canoe as it glides through the wetlands, and sit around the campfire with the expedition team as they plan the next day's journey." You can watch the episode here:

However, if you want the truly immersive VR experience, you can watch it either on your Oculus device via the YouTube VR app or on your Google Daydream device via the National Geographic application (you will need to download it from Google Play first). The next episodes in the series will be released in the following weeks - December 18, December 25 and January 1.

National Geographic also stated that they are committed to releasing more similar content. Jenna Pirog, National Geographic's senior director of video and immersive experiences, said in a statement: "National Geographic has always pushed the boundaries of visual storytelling. We're looking forward to a long-term partnership with YouTube that will allow us to remain industry stewards for marrying immersive technology with impactful storytelling."

[Update: More details from internal email] Essential reportedly cancels second phone, puts itself up for sale

According to Bloomberg , Essential, an up-and-coming phone manufacturer, is reportedly calling it quits, canceling its second phone and putting out a "For Sale" sign. The company, founded by Android's creator Andy Rubin, has supposedly hired an outside firm to advise it on a potential sale, with one suitor allegedly showing interest. The Essential Phone, or the PH-1, was a phone focused on physical beauty, despite the deep notch at the top of the display for the front camera and sensors. Despite its problems, it gained a small but loyal following, many of whom were anxiously waiting for Essential's sophomore phone (PH-2?). Those dreams look to be crushed now, with Rubin's company canceling its second device. Bloomberg 's source claims that the engineers, some of whom came from Apple and Google, will likely be a part of the sale, but Essential is still trying to make a decision.  Bloomberg  also reports that Essential is pivoting to the smart home

Simband isn’t dead—its technology could be coming to a device near you soon

Samsung unveiled the Simband , a reference wearable that manufacturers could experiment with, back in 2014. The unit was packed full of sensors that tracked blood pressure, skin temperature, sweat production, blood volume, heart rate and more, leading many to believe that it would be released once the Apple Watch, which was rumored to be a revolutionary health device, hit the shelves—but that wasn’t the case. The firm actually had no intention of launching the Simband on the open market. It was made exclusively for developers, something that became evident when it took the wraps off the Galaxy Gear 2 . A number of small private equity funds are presently targeting a major consolidation of some Amazon sellers, The Information reports, citing several brokers pursuing such ambitions. Companies with an established retail presence on Amazon's e-commerce platform are now widely seen as relatively safe investments in the United States, with the Seattle, Washington-based tech giant operating a service that already disrupted the stateside retail industry, having managed to become a major part of everyday lives of many Americans in recent times.
