Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ may come with Intelligent Scan tech to take on Apple's Face ID

Samsung is gearing to launch the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ on February 25, a day ahead of MWC 2018, in Barcelona. A lot has been already leaked about the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ and even serial tipster Evan Blass has posted his take on the new flagship phones, leaving almost nothing to the imagination. A new Android Police report however suggests that the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ may come with one more piece of technology that we're yet to see on a Samsung phone. The technology is called Intelligent Scan and it's said to be a biometric feature that makes use of facial and iris scanning to unlock the phone(s) even in dark and harsh light.

Intelligent Scan will reportedly make use of the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+' front camera sensor as well as the iris scanner to help the phones detect a user's face in challenging light scenarios. Not a lot is known about the Intelligent Scan for now, but, it seems the technology should ideally switch between face unlock and iris scanning depending on the available light. The Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ allow users to have fingerprint and face/iris unlock at one go, and it isn't possible to have face and iris sensing enabled at the same time. But face and iris scanning have their limitations. With Intelligent Scan, Samsung may be looking to offer users the best of both worlds and therefore entail in a phone that unlocks more seamlessly. Clearly, the move would be directed to take on Apple's Face ID.

Facial recognition tech on-board the iPhone X is aided by a TrueDepth camera system that consists of depth-sensing hardware: a dot projector, an infrared camera and a flood illuminator. "Face ID projects more than 30,000 invisible IR dots. The IR image and dot pattern are pushed through neural networks to create a mathematical model of your face and send the data to the secure enclave to confirm a match, while adapting to physical changes in appearance over time. All saved facial information is protected by the secure enclave to keep data extremely secure, while all of the processing is done on-device and not in the cloud to protect user privacy. Face ID only unlocks iPhone X when customers look at it and is designed to prevent spoofing by photos or masks," according to Apple.

In essence, Apple claims that its Face ID is safer, faster and adaptable. With Intelligent Scan, Samsung may be looking to offer a similar solution although how much of it would be hardware-dependent is yet to be seen.
