Chrome OS is experimenting with a centered shelf layout

The team behind Chrome OS is often testing new features via flags, and the latest of these is a centered shelf layout. The concept is pretty simple - the apps you have on your taskbar, called a 'shelf' by Google, get centered with this flag. Fancy stuff.

In this experiment, the pinned apps are on the left, while the other icons are on the right. I would say the change is reminiscent of macOS's taskbar, but it's kind of hard to claim given that this is just a matter of alignment, and it doesn't disappear by default like Apple's does. Many people have been saying that this makes the UI more touchscreen-friendly, but I'd argue the opposite; putting the apps in the center makes them more difficult to reach with your fingers.

Anyway, if you're in the Canary channel and would like to try this out, enable the flag "chrome://flags/#shelf-new-ui" and restart Chrome.

Telenav Seeks Disruption With Free In-Car Services

Location-based solution provider Telenav is seeking to disrupt the in-car services industry with a new monetization platform designed to offer a variety of in-car services such as free navigation to consumers and monetize them through advertising. Originally announced at Las Vegas, Nevada-based Consumer Electronics Show in January, Telenav's offering is effectively targeted at bringing the ad-supported software business model that already proved its worth in the mobile industry to the in-vehicle tech segment. The company's internal studies and a number of independent surveys suggest the vast majority of consumers "would prefer free in-car services monetized through ads rather than pay for them" like they would traditionally, Telenav Executive Director of Strategy Ky Tang told AndroidHeadlines in an interview. Galaxy Tab S3 reveals specs at benchmarking website

We picked up on a rumor out of China earlier this week which claimed to reveal the Galaxy Tab S3 specifications . It was claimed that the upcoming tablet would be powered by an Exynos 7420 processor with 4GB RAM. We’re seeing a conflicting report today as the Galaxy Tab S3 has now been spotted on the benchmarking website GFXBench. As per the benchmark result, the Galaxy Tab S3 features a 9.6-inch display with 2,048×1536 pixel resolution and a 2.1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor under the hood hooked up to 4GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage. It also reveals that the device could feature a 12-megapixel rear camera and may be running Android 7.0 Nougat from the get go. It’s pertinent to mention here that only the 9.6-inch variant of the Galaxy Tab S3 has been spotted as far and it remains to be seen if its smaller sibling will make an apperance soon as well.
