Google Pixel 3 will get Call Screen transcript saving by end of 2018

  • Google will let users save conversation transcripts on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3XL later this year.
  • The feature integrates with Call Screen, which allows Google Assistant to answer calls on the user's behalf.
  • It's only available in the U.S. currently.

Google will roll out transcript saving to Call Screen for the Pixel 3 and 3XL later this year. Paul Dunlop, a Project Manager for Google's Call Screen, revealed this in a comment in the Google Product Forums (spotted by Piunikaweb) last week.

The Google Pixel 3's Call Screen feature, which started landing on the Pixel 2 and 2XL last week, allows Google Assistant to answer calls on the user's behalf. Google Assistant will ask the caller why they are calling, and state that it will pass on a copy of the conversation to the receiver. It's intended to help people deal with spam calls.

Rozetked Speculation abounded that Google would release a third, cheaper variant of its Google Pixel 3 line, but no announcement was made at the October launch event. Now, however, we have images and specs …

Until now, this service has removed written transcripts at the end of the call. However, Dunlop said these will be saved in the Call Details part of the app in the future. This will allow users to quickly get the information they need about each call at any point after the initial call was received.

Dunlop also said there would be a public beta for the feature coming up before it reaches all Pixel 3 owners sometime later in 2018.

It should be a worthy addition to what's already shaping up to be a very useful service and I suspect it will trickle down to the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL in the future. It's still only available in the U.S. for the moment, though.
