Whole Foods is now available on Google Express
The relationship between Google and Amazon is, at the risk of understatement, the slightest bit strained. As the two tech giants continue to grow and expand their interests, we're seeing increasing overlap, with both offering things like streaming media, app stores, mobile hardware, and retail services. And while they manage to largely coexist, you don't have to look hard to see some of the conflict peeking through the seams, like the continued unavailability of Chromecast models on Amazon. But today it appears that some of those differences are being put to the side, as Whole Foods comes to Google Express.
Whole Foods online shopping has already been available through Amazon itself, but with orders restricted to Prime members. There's also the option to order through Instacart, which has a $35 minimum for free delivery, or you can pay extra for its Express service.
With Google Express, you'll get free Whole Foods delivery after spending just $15. Of course, those other two options will give you same-day delivery, including fresh items like meats and produce, while Whole Food orders placed though Google Express arrive via regular package courier services. As a result the Whole Foods selection available through Google Express is limited to non-perishable items.
That said, the offerings do seem pretty well fleshed-out, especially for a Google Express store (which can occasionally pale in comparison to a retailer's own site). In addition to standard groceries you'll find health and beauty products, pet food, and household supplies.
While none of this will replace fresh grocery delivery, it's still a nice new option to have, and represents a particularly high-profile get for Google Express.
