The last of the Nexus phones receive their final update

The Nexus 6P and budget-friendly 5X launched in 2015 with a three-year update guarantee from Google. This included two years of major software upgrades and three years of security updates. That makes 2018 the last year for Nexus updates as the new Pixel line replaced them in 2016. A spontaneous two-month extension was granted last year that makes November the final month of 2018 security updates for both devices.

Both Nexus phones were updated yesterday with the latest November security patch, advancing them to build number OPM7.181105.004. They're stuck on Android 8.1 Oreo as the two-year software upgrade policy expired in 2017. So according to Google's policy (confirmed on their update support page), the latest Nexus phones will no longer receive updates of any kind. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that they won't.

Previous Nexus phones have received updates after their official EOL, so a security patch or two could still make it to the Nexus 6P and 5X. Only time will tell, but at this point it's probably a good idea to just upgrade to a new iPhone. Yes, that's a joke – go get a Pixel.

Apple has decided to postpone new features in iOS in favor of improving the reliability and performance of the operating system, as according to a report by Axios. According to the report, Craig Federighi, Senior Vice President, Software Engineering, announced the revised plan to employees at a meeting earlier this month. This pushes features like refresh of the homescreen and in-car user interface, improvements to core apps like Mail and camera experience to 2019. What we will get this year is improvements to AR, digital health and parental controls. Apart from that, the OS will largely feature improvements to performance and user experience.
